The Western Sayan ( Russian За́падный Сая́н ; also Western Sayan ) is a mountain range in the south of Siberia .
The Western Sayan is occasionally combined with the northeastern Eastern Sayan to form the " Sayan Mountains ". It extends over a length of about 650 km over the south of the Krasnoyarsk region and the northern part of the Tuva Republic . The width varies between 80 and 200 km. In the west, the mountain range begins at the source of the Maly Abakan, east of Lake Teletsk . It borders in the west on the Shapshal ridge of the eastern Altai and on the Abakan Mountains south of the Kuznetsk Alatau . In the east, the Western Sayan meets the central section of the Eastern Sayan. The rivers Kasyr , Uda and Kizhi-Chem have their source in the transition area to Eastern Sayan . The Yenisei cuts through the West Sayan at its middle section.
