The Krasnoyarsk Region ( Russian Красноярский край / Krasnoyarski krai ) is an administrative region ( Krai ) in Russia with the capital Krasnoyarsk . The majority of the population consists of Russians . The Ukrainians are the largest minority , with indigenous Siberian peoples only making up a fraction of less than one percent. Since the connection of two previously independent autonomous districts, the region has been Russia's second largest federal subject in terms of area after the Sakha Republic .

geography

The region is located in the federal district of Siberia and extends from the Sayan Mountains in the south along the Yenisei to the Taimyr peninsula , which is only 3/5 as far from the North Pole as the North Cape at Cape Chelyuskin , the northernmost mainland point of the Old World , namely 1366 km . The Angara and Tschuna are important tributaries of the Yenisei .

The climate is continental with long winters and short, hot summers.

history

Archaeological finds have shown that Siberia was settled around 200,000 years ago. Burial mounds and monuments of the Scythian culture from the seventh and eighth centuries BC on the banks of the Krasnoyarsk reservoir are evidence of the oldest Scythian finds in Eurasia, among others. a. the famous Kurgan Arshan , a princely grave, which was uncovered in 2001.

Russian colonization of the area, mainly by Cossacks, began in the 17th century.

With the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway , the settlement of the region increased strongly.

In the Stalin era there were numerous Gulag camps in the region. The city of Igarka was to be opened up by a 1,300 km long railway from Vorkuta via Salekhard and connected to the Arctic Ocean with a seaport via the Yenisei . Project no. 501 on the Ob and project no. 503 on the Yenisei were to be connected to the northern main line. 100,000 to 120,000 people - mainly Gulag inmates - were used to build it.

Popular general Alexander Lebed was elected governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory in May 1998. He held this position until one in the crash of Mi-8 - helicopter on 28 April 2002 in Abakan was killed. During the coup in August 1991 against President Mikhail Gorbachev , his soldiers protected the “White House” in Moscow and Boris Yeltsin .

On January 26, 2002, the first meeting of the “Council of Muslims of the Krasnoyarsk Territory” took place in Krasnoyarsk. It was created on the proposal of the chairman of the Committee for Affairs of Nationalities, Religion and Social Associations, Mark Denisov.

On January 1, 2007, after a referendum on April 17, 2005, the Krasnoyarsk Territory was expanded to include the territory of the Evenk Autonomous Okrug and the Taimyr Autonomous Okrug .
