The Kirov Oblast ( Russian Кировская область Kirovskaja oblast ) is a Russian administrative unit. It is located in the eastern part of European Russia in the Volga Federal District .
history
The area came under Russian rule in the 15th century, which was an important step towards the Urals for Russia . Most of it later belonged to the Vyatka Governorate . The current administrative unit was founded as Krai (Region) in 1934 , but renamed Oblast in 1936.
population
The last Russian censuses in 2002 and 2010 showed a population of 1,503,529 and 1,341,312 residents, respectively. The number of inhabitants thus fell by 162,217 people (−10.8%) in these eight years. The distribution of the different ethnic groups was as follows:

The area's population is approximately 90% Russian. The Tatars, Mari, Udmurts and Ukrainians were important ethnic minorities in Kirov Oblast at the end of the Soviet Empire. However, their numbers are falling sharply.
Administrative divisions and cities
Kirov Oblast is divided into 39 Rajons and 6 urban districts. The city districts are formed by the Oblastverwaltungszentrum Kirow , which was called Vyatka until 1934 , the four next largest cities Kirowo-Chepetsk , Vyatskije Polyany , Slobodskoi and Kotelnitsch and the "closed" settlement Pervomaiski . There are a total of 18 cities and 40 urban-type settlements .

economy
The most important branches of industry include mechanical engineering, metal processing, and the paper and wood industries.
traffic
The most important transport links in the oblast are the Trans-Siberian Railway and the connecting railway to Kotlas , where there is a connection to the Pechora Railway to Vorkuta . Traffic within the area is mainly by road. On the Vyatka is inland navigation possible.
