history
The first village as the forerunner of today's city was Ust-Tschepza , literally "Tschepza estuary". This place was founded in the 15th century by settlers from the Novgorod Republic . Until the beginning of the 20th century it remained a largely insignificant village with well below 1000 inhabitants.
The present city did not begin to form until the 1930s. In 1935, construction work began on a large thermal power station near the village , which was supposed to supply the Oblast capital, Kirov, with electricity. The workers' settlement that was created when the power plant was built was given the status of an urban-type settlement in 1942 under the name of Kirovo-Chepetsk and on March 28, 1955, received city rights as Kirovo-Chepetsk . In 1960 the city became the center of the Rajon of the same name within the Kirov Oblast.
