The city is located about 250 km southwest of the Oblast capital Kirov on the Jaran River in the Kama river system .

Jaransk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

history

Jaransk was established in 1584 as a Russian Ostrog with this surrounding settlement on the border to the settlement area of the Mari and in 1780 received city rights as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ).
