Orlow ( Russian Орлов ) is a small town in Kirov Oblast ( Russia ) with 6959 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 75 km west of the Oblast capital Kirov on the left bank of the Vyatka , a tributary of the Kama .
Orlov is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
history
Orlov was first mentioned under this name in 1459, was known as Orlovets around 1600 and received town charter as Orlov in 1780 .
From 1923 to 1992 the city was called Chalturin , after the Narodnaya Volja member and Tsar assassin Stepan Chalturin (1857-1882), who was born in the village of Verkhniye Shuravli (then Chalevinskaya ), who was three kilometers away .
