Narodnaja Wolja ( Russian Народная воля for people's will and at the same time people's freedom ) was a social revolutionary secret society in the Russian Empire , which organized the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881 .

Narodnaja Wolja emerged from the split in the Land and Will (or Land and Freedom ; Russian Semlja i volja ) movement in 1879 , which wanted to bring the revolution to the people (“ Volkstümler ”). The goals of the organization were the overthrow of the tsar , free and general elections, representatives of the people and freedom of opinion, press and conscience and a constitution . She was responsible for the bomb assassination on March 13, 1881 , the Tsar Alexander II. In Saint Petersburg on Griboyedov Canal died, the site of the later Church of the Resurrection .

Through an informant on the organization’s executive committee, Sergei Degayev , who had been recruited by the Petersburg inspector Georgi Sudeikin , the Ochrana succeeded in dismantling printing works and bomb laboratories as well as the entire organization. Many of the members have been executed , exiled or died during years of imprisonment .

Members have included Stepan Khalturin , Vera Figner , Mikhail Frolenko , Nikolai Young , Nikolai Kibalchich , Sofya Perovskaya , Józef Pilsudski , Alexander Solovyov , Aaron Sundelewitsch , Arkadi Tyrkow , Alexander Ulyanov and Ludmila Wolkenstein .

The Soviet writer Yuri Trifonov processed the history of Narodowolts after archival studies in the 1973 historical novel Impatience (Нетерпение).
