Stepan Khalturin ( Russian Степан Николаевич Халтурин * December 21, 1856 jul. / 2. January  1857 greg. In Chalewinskaja, Ujesd Orlov , Vyatka Governorate , † March 22 jul. / 3. April  1882 greg. In Odessa ) was a Russian revolutionary and assassin .

Life

Chalturin was born into a large, affluent peasant family. He attended school from 1868 to 1871 and read a lot. He then learned the profession of cabinet maker in Vjatka in 1874/75 . As such, he was later engaged to work on the Tsar's yacht and in the Winter Palace . He originally planned to emigrate to the United States with some friends , but since their passports were stolen, he was forced to stay in Moscow .

Chalturin moved to Saint Petersburg in 1875 , where he was active in political agitation . Since he found hardly any legal opportunities to do so in authoritarian tsarism, he lived in illegality from 1877 and founded the Northern League of Russian Workers in 1878 together with WP Obnorski . When this was uncovered and smashed the following year, Chalturin decided to continue the fight with terrorist methods within the Narodnaya Volya . On February 5th, Jul. / February 17, 1880 greg. he carried out an explosive attack on Tsar Alexander II and his family in the Winter Palace , which the Tsar's family survived.

Chalturin then went into hiding in Moscow, where he continued to work as a propagandist and was elected to the executive committee of Narodnaya Volya. In 1882 he was connected with the murder of the public prosecutor WS Strelnikov and arrested. He was executed shortly afterwards .

aftermath

From 1923 to 1992, the small town of Orlov in the Kirov Oblast , near Khalturin's birthplace Chalevinskaya (today Verkhniye Shuravli), was named Chalturin .
