The Spitz – Arnsdorf roller ferry is a roller ferry in the Wachau across the Danube . It offers a ferry from Spitz an der Donau on the orographic left bank of the Danube to Arnsdorf on the right bank. It is the only year-round connection within the Wachau, as the two bridges are only in Melk upstream and Mautern downstream. It is located at Stromkilometer 2020. Another ferry, which also transports motor vehicles, is still at Weißenkirchen to St. Lorenz .

The ferry consists of two interconnected hulls and can carry people and vehicles with a load capacity of 20 tons. The suspension cable has a total length of 485 meters and is anchored to towers on the banks.

The ferry was built in 1928 and put into operation on May 17th.

The ferry hit the headlines in October 2007 when a small aircraft got caught in the suspension cable and fell into the Danube. All four inmates were killed.

Hikers on the Austrian north-south long-distance hiking trail are dependent on the use of the roller ferry, as using the next bridge would require a long detour.

Camera Obscura by Ólafur Elíasson

When the Wachau was declared a World Heritage Site in 2004 , a camera obscura was installed by Ólafur Elíasson , a Danish artist . The original on-board cabin represents the camera's dark chamber. The light for the camera is projected into the room via lenses and mirrors. The image of the two banks of the Danube appear mirror-inverted and upside down on the wall.
