The Gribojedow Canal ( Russian Канал Грибоедова , Canal Gribojedowa ) was built in 1739 under the name Katharinenkanal . It follows the course of the Krivuscha and is now the middle of three main canals through the center of Saint Petersburg . It was named in 1923 after the writer and diplomat Alexander Gribojedow , who lived in one of the houses on the canal from 1816 to 1818.

The canal is five kilometers long, 32 meters wide and connects the Moika near the Martian field ( position of the beginning of the channel coordinates: 59 ° 56 ′ 29.4 ″  N , 30 ° 19 ′ 43.5 ″  E ) with the Fontanka near her Muzzle into the Neva ( location of the end of the canal ). The Gribojedow Canal is spanned by 21 bridges, some of which are very elaborately designed. In addition to the very narrow pedestrian bridges Greifen- and Löwenbrücke and narrow road bridges such as the Italian Bridge, there are also more complex and wider structures such as the Theater Bridge at the beginning of the canal at the Blood Church or the 95-meter-wide Kazan Bridge at the level of Nevsky Prospect .
