The Kazan Bridge ( Russian Казанский мост Kazanski most ) is an 18.8 meter long and 95 meter wide bridge over the Griboyedov Canal in Saint Petersburg ( Russia ). In addition to the Green Bridge and the Anitschkow Bridge , it is one of the three river crossings on the course of the Nevsky Prospect .

The bridge was built in 1716 when the Nevsky Perspective Street was relocated and originally, like the other two road bridges on the prospectus later, was a simple wooden bridge. In this area, Perspective Street spanned the Kriwuscha river, whose bed was not until 1739 when the Gribojedow was relocated -Kanal (until 1923: Katharinen Canal) was used. In 1737 the previously unnamed bridge in Roshdestvenski Most ( Рождественский мост , in German "Christmas Bridge ") was named because the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, which was later demolished, was in the immediate vicinity. In 1766, the old wooden bridge was replaced by the current, very slightly arched arch bridge made of granite-clad brick based on a design by the engineer Illarion Golenishchev-Kutuzov (the father of the future military leader Mikhail Kutuzov ). In 1805-06 the bridge was expanded under the direction of Luigi Rusca and reached its current width of 95 meters. To this day, the Kazan Bridge is the third widest in Saint Petersburg. Due to the very low height of the arch tip above the water level of the canal, boats must not be able to go under it.

The current name was given to the bridge during the reconstruction at the beginning of the 19th century, as the Kazan Cathedral , which still exists today, was built in the immediate vicinity at the same time on the site of the old Church of the Nativity . From 1923 to 1944 the bridge was called Plekhanov Bridge ( Мост Плеханова ) in honor of the socialist philosopher Georgi Plekhanov .

In addition to the Kazan Cathedral, the Art Nouveau Singer House is another attraction on the Kazan Bridge.
