The Green Bridge ( Russian Зелёный мост Seljony most ) in Saint Petersburg ( Russia ) spans the Moika River at its crossing with Nevsky Prospect , the main street in the city's historic center. The length of the particular for pedestrian and automobile traffic bridge amounts to nearly 40 meters with a total width of 38.7 meters.

In 1716, when Perspektivstrasse was relocated from the Admiralty, a few hundred meters west of the Moika, to the old trade route to Novgorod and on to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, a simple, hinged wooden bridge was built over the Moika. In addition to the Kazan Bridge over the river Kriwuscha, which was later straightened into today's Gribojedow Canal, and the Anitschkow Bridge over the Fontanka , the Green Bridge represented one of the three waterways crossings on Perspective Street. The name "Green Bridge" was given to the initially nameless structure in 1735, because the construction of the bridge had been painted green a few years earlier. Since 1768, the name Police Bridge (Russian Полицейский мост ) was also used for the bridge on Nevsky Prospect over the Moika , as there was an administrative headquarters of the Petersburg police in the immediate vicinity. In October 1918 the bridge was officially renamed the People's Bridge ( Народный мост ) and carried that name until 1998, when the bridge was given its historical name back.

During the 18th century the original wooden bridge had to be renewed and rebuilt several times. In 1806 the old bridge was demolished and today's Green Bridge was built in its place, based on a design by the Scottish engineer William Heste . Heste made the supports of the new bridge from stone, while the flat arch was assembled from hollow cast-iron blocks. This bridge construction, which was new for what was then Petersburg, was later used for other bridges over the Moika.

In 1842 the bridge was widened to cope with the increasing volume of traffic on Nevsky Prospect, and two years later the bridge's road surface was tarred with asphalt cubes for the first time in Russia . 1905-07 the bridge was renewed in the run-up to the commissioning of the first electric tram line on the Nevsky Prospect. The arch construction with the carriageway was also widened, and the eye-catching hexagonal lanterns were placed on decorative gold-plated poles at the four corners of the bridge. These lanterns were faithfully reproduced in the 1950s.

The baroque Stroganow Palace is located in the immediate vicinity of the Green Bridge on the corner of Nevsky Prospect and Moika Embankment .
