A building on the site of today's ruin was first mentioned in 1307, but at the time it was probably just a tower. In 1432 the first documentary name was given as "Aichelburg". This castle was destroyed by imperial troops before 1460, but was rebuilt in 1480. In 1500 Aichelburg was awarded to Christoph Viertaler, who is considered to be the founder of the Aichelburg family. In 1516 the castle was destroyed by fire, but was then rebuilt again. The curtain wall and remains of the towers are still preserved from the castle, which was finally abandoned in 1691, probably due to an earthquake a year earlier.
