Urban Görtschacher (* around 1485 in Villach ; † after 1530) was an Austrian painter.

Life

The life dates of one of Carinthia's most important painters in the first quarter of the 16th century are unknown. Urban Görtschacher, who could have had ancestors from Villach, was probably active in the Drau town after years of apprenticeship and traveling from around 1515 to around 1522. But despite his remarkable artistic profile and his interesting contribution to Carinthian art of the Dürer period , his figure remains in the dark. The archives give no information about him. Görtschacher is likely to have remained loyal to the artistic medium of the panel painting throughout his life . The master's painting style does not differ from that of other alpine artists. In Carinthia has at least half a dozen of his works on GothicWinged altars outlasts time. The last known signature dates from 1530.

The Urban-Görtschacher-Straße was named in his honor in Villach.

plant

Urban Görtschacher's connections to Paduan and Venetian painting suggest that he stayed in Italy several times . In the succession of Thomas von Villach , his work stands between late Gothic and early Renaissance .
