The oldest written documents on Austrian territory were found here from this time. At the turn of the times, the Romans built a city here with a fortification wall, a Gallo-Roman temple and an administrative building measuring around 40 × 25 meters. The heyday of the Roman settlement ended before the middle of the 1st century AD. Excavations took place from 1884 to 1887, in the 1990s and from 2004 to 2008.

The furnishings are partly in the neo-renaissance style (high altar), partly neo-Gothic (side altars and pulpit, guardian angel group); a crucifixion group and the prayer chairs are late baroque.

There is a four-tier wall system on the church hill. After excavations in 2001 and 2002, it is assumed that the hill was settled in late Celtic times, and that the first rampart was also believed to have come into being from that time. The rampart system was renewed and expanded in late antiquity and in the high Middle Ages.
