The Bichlhof Castle is a listed building in the Rotte of the same name in the municipality of St. Stefan im Gailtal in Carinthia .

Building description

The Bichlhof, formerly also called Aichbichl, is a stick-like nobleman’s seat on a plateau above the Gailtal . The first building was probably built around 1600. The current two-storey building with a hipped roof was built in the 18th century. It has 5: 3 window axes. Its current appearance comes from a renovation around 1800. The entrance gate in the central axis of the main facade has a round arch, above it a twin window . The other windows have ear frames. The plaster cubes of the building corner ends are alternately convex and concave. The vestibule has a groin vault . In the west of the main building there is a chapel, an almost square building with a gable roof.

Owner story

According to tradition, the property was assigned to one of the sons of Maximilian Christoph Viertaler, the founder of the Aichelburg family, as early as the first half of the 16th century . The castle was first mentioned in a document, however, from 1660, when it was owned by a Ferencz Gregoritsch. Only after a few changes of ownership did it become the headquarters of the Barons of Aichelburg-Bichelhof, who owned it until 1929. Via Otto Kharassnig and Blasius Leiler, who only owned the Bichlhof for a few years, the property finally came into the possession of the Werner Rieckh family from Graz in 1941.
