Mary in the trench

The branch church of Our Lady in the Graben , also known as Maria im Graben , is a Roman Catholic church in Vorderberg in the municipality of Sankt Stefan im Gailtal in Carinthia .

The late Gothic church from the 15th century stands in a deep gorge south of the village of Vorderberg.

The nave has a flat ceiling with ceiling paintings from 1719, the transition to the choir is a chamfered, pointed arch, drawn-in triumphal arch, the single-yoke choir with 3/8 end with ribbed vaulting over cantilevered round services shows coats of arms on some of the consoles. On the north side of the choir is a pointed arch portal with a late Gothic iron door to the sacristy in the basement of the mighty northern tower with an eight-part pointed gable helmet. There are late Gothic wall paintings and frescoes that have been exposed.

The high altar is from the 17th century, the left side altar is marked with 1727, the right side altar with 1696. There is a Margaret altar from 1670/1680 on the north wall of the nave. The late Gothic choir stalls with flat carvings are from the 16th century. There is a 13th century bell and an Urban Fiering bell from 1548.

A late Gothic winged altar is today in the parish church of Vorderberg . Two former wing altar panels are in Hermagor. Carved figures with the late Gothic figure of Maria Selbdritt from the former winged altar, as well as a glass painting fragment of Maria with child and female saint , are in the Diocesan Museum in Klagenfurt .

Confession stone in front of the Church of Our Lady

There is a secret Protestant confessional stone in front of the side entrance of the church . The two thickly inscribed stone slabs contain the spiritual will of an unknown Protestant who was buried here in the Catholic cemetery. The inscription consists of quotations from the Bible from the Gospel of John and the Book of Wisdom , religious-moral thoughts and personal statements. The inscription also contains the request to the neighborhood Vorderberg, the owner of the cemetery at the time, to be allowed to build the grave and the confessional stone at the church. The fulfillment of the request is a remarkable sign of tolerance in an otherwise Catholic town.
