The Lion Bridge ( Russian Львиный мост Lwiny most or Мост о четырёх львах Most o tschetyrjoch lwach ) in Saint Petersburg is a pedestrian bridge completed in 1826 . The chain bridge , designed by the Baden civil engineer Wilhelm von Traitteur and Basil Christianowicz , crosses the Gribojedow Canal .
The bridge has a span of 23 m, whereby the two load-bearing chains have a slack of 1.5 m. The suspension chains consist of long, thin iron rods that are connected to one another with eyes and bolts . The hangers, which are also made of thin iron rods, are also attached to the connecting element. The suspension chains are held by a total of four lion heads, which in this way form a decorative end to the 2.14 m wide bridges. The lions that give the bridge its name come from the sculptor Pavel Petrovich Sokolow .
Wilhelm von Traitteur also built the Egyptian Bridge and the Griffin Bridge at the same time , which are also equipped with figures by Sokolow.
