history
In 1570, settlers from Novgorod , who had fled the pogrom under Ivan IV , founded a pogost (called Nikolski pogost ) on the banks of the Lala . Due to its favorable location at the intersection of several important highways, the settlement , which was soon renamed Lalski Possad , developed into an important trading center in the 17th and 18th centuries and in 1780, under its current name, became the administrative seat of its own Ujesds Lalsk within the Ustyug Oblast ( governorship Vologda ), which only existed until 1796 and was then incorporated into the new Ujesd Ustjug . At the end of the 18th century, when the vital trade routes shifted further south, the city began to decline, which was sealed in 1898 with the construction of the Kotlas - Vjatka railway line , as it did not route across Lalsk, but across Lusa further west has been. After the October Revolution , the place lost its town charter and was elevated to an urban-type settlement in 1927 .
