At the end of the 18th century, when the vital trade routes shifted further south, the city began to decline, which was sealed in 1898 with the construction of the Kotlas - Vjatka railway line , as it did not route across Lalsk, but across Lusa further west has been. After the October Revolution , the place lost its town charter and was elevated to an urban-type settlement in 1927 .
