Veliky Ustyug ( Russian Великий Устюг ) is a city in Russia . It is a district town and is located in the far northeast of the Vologda Oblast . It has 31,665 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

history

As early as the 9th to 10th centuries, there was a Finno-Ugric settlement at the mouth of the two rivers . In the 11th century, the Russian settlement of the region began from Novgorod . The city was first mentioned in 1207 under the name Ustjug (translated: mouth of the Jug); by 1212 it was obviously fortified, which indicates a longer Russian settlement history. Towards the end of the 14th century it fell to the Grand Duchy of Moscow . Ustyug has been an important trading center since the end of the 15th century; In the 16th century it was given the addition of "large" (Weliki) because of its importance.

Attractions

Veliky Ustyug has been known in Russia since 1999 for its Christmas post office in addition to the large number of preserved churches and monasteries, which are an outstanding example of ensembles of northern Russian architecture . The "residence" of Father Frost , the Russian Santa Claus counterpart, attracts tourists especially in winter.
