history
Babajewo originated in the 15th century and was first mentioned as a village in 1461.
In 1822 the then local owner founded an iron foundry in Babajewo on the bank of the Kolp , which later specialized in the manufacture of railroad tracks, among other things. The iron ore was mined in the local area at that time, but this was no longer profitable in the same century. The ironworks was then closed.
In 1904 Babajewo received a railway connection on the new line from Saint Petersburg to Vyatka . A locomotive depot was built at the resulting station, which gave the place a certain importance and increased the population. In 1925, when Babajewo already had about 6,000 inhabitants, it received city rights and two years later it was elevated to the status of a district center .
