Wytegra ( Russian Вытегра ) is a city in northwestern Russia . It is located in the Vologda Oblast and has 10,488 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 280 km northwest of the oblast capital Vologda on the Wytegra River , about 15 km from its confluence with Lake Onega . Here the Wytegra is part of the Volga-Baltic Sea waterway , like its predecessor, the Marien Canal System, which was put into operation in 1810 .
Wytegra is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
history
The place has been known since 1710 under the name Wjangi (Russian Вянги , after the tributary that flows into the Wytegra) and received city rights in 1773 under its current name.

Culture and sights
In Wytegra are the Resurrection Cathedral (Russian Воскресенский собор / Woskressenski sobor, 1796–1800) and the Church of the Representation of the Lord ( Сретенская церковь / Sretenskaja zerkow, 1869–73).
Nearby, in the village of Anchimowo, the extraordinary wooden Cathedral of the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin Mary ( Покровский собор / Pokrowski sobor, 1708) with 24 domes burned down in 1963.
