List of cities in Russia |
Kadnikow ( Russian Кадников ) is a small town in northwestern Russia . It is located in the Vologda Oblast and has 4796 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 45 km northeast of the oblast capital Vologda on the Sodima River in the catchment area of the Northern Dvina .
Kadnikow is administratively subordinate to the Sokol district . The nearest town and district center Sokol is located 12 kilometers southwest of Kadnikow.
history
Kadnikow emerged from a guard post established in 1492, which originally served to protect a north Russian trade route. The place name comes from the old Russian job title kadnik (for example " Böttcher "), which indicates the former importance of the place for the craft.
In 1780 Kadnikow received city rights as part of an all-Russian administrative reform and was a district town in the Vologda governorate of the Russian Empire until the 20th century . However, after the main route of the Russian Northern Railway from Vologda to Arkhangelsk was moved at the beginning of the 20th century , bypassing Kadnikov, the city lost its economic importance.
