Verkhovashye ( Russian Верхова́жье ) is a village (selo) in Vologda Oblast with 5025 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is located a good 200 kilometers northeast of the administrative center of Vologda on both sides (the center on the left) of the left North Dvina tributary Waga , not far from the border with the neighboring Arkhangelsk region to the north .

Werchowaschje is the administrative center of the Rajons Werchowaschski and the rural community posselenije Werchowaschskoje selskoje (km 4 northeast) which also includes the villages Filinskaja, Rogatschicha (4 km southwest) and Werchneje Makarowo (4,5 km north-east) and the settlement (possjolok) Tjoply Rutschei ( 2 km east), all on the right bank of the Waga.

history

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1613 as pogost , as in northern Russia usually settlements consisting of a church and cemetery for the surrounding villages and a few residential buildings were referred to. From 1678 until the early 20th century he was called Verkhovashsky Possad ; possad was a common name for towns predominantly inhabited by traders and craftsmen, the name refers to the location on the upper reaches (Russian werch for "upper part") of the river Waga. The place initially belonged to the Ujesd Waga (Waschski ujesd), after its dissolution in 1780 to the Ujesd Welsk of the Vologda governorate, from 1796 of the Vologda governorate .

From the 1870s, Verkhovashsky Posad was a place of political exile . In a major fire in the summer of 1879, the village was almost completely destroyed, so that it lost its previous economic importance, especially as a regional trading center, and the number of inhabitants decreased significantly. This did not change until the 1920s, when Verkhovashye became the seat of a Volost , from which a Northern Krai Rajon named after him emerged on July 15, 1929 (from 1936 in the Northern Oblast , from 1937 in the Vologda Oblast).
