Ustjuschna ( Russian Устюжна ) is a city in northwestern Russia . It is located in the Vologda Oblast and has 9501 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 230 km west of the oblast capital Vologda on the Mologa which flows into the Rybinsk reservoir of the Volga .

Ustyuschna is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

history

The place was first mentioned in the Uglich Chronicle in 1252 as Ustjug-Schelesny and received city rights in 1738. The addition -Schelesny (in various forms, from Russian scheleso for iron , based on the lawn iron stone deposits in the area) has been omitted since the 19th century.
