Kirillow ( Russian Кириллов ) is a small town in northwestern Russia . It is located in the Vologda Oblast and has 7728 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 130 km northwest of the oblast capital Vologda on several lakes and the Northern Dvina Canal , which connects the river systems of the Volga and Northern Dvina .
Kirillov is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
history
Kirillow emerged as a trading settlement (Sloboda) around the Russian Orthodox Kirillo-Belosersky Monastery , founded in 1397 , which was the most important religious and cultural center of the Russian north until the 17th century. In 1776 the place received city rights.

Culture and sights
In addition to the Kirillo Belozersky monastery , other monastery complexes have been preserved in the vicinity of the city, such as the Gorizy Resurrection Monastery from 1544 on the bank of the Sheksna and the Ferapontov Monastery from 1398, 20 kilometers away .
