Scheksna ( Russian Шексна́ ) is an urban-type settlement in the Vologda Oblast ( Russia ) with 20,953 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located about 75 kilometers as the crow flies west of the Vologda Oblast Administrative Center and 30 kilometers northeast of the city of Cherepovets on the left bank of the Sheksna tributary of the Volga .
Sheksna is the administrative center of the Sheksna Rajons of the same name .
history
From 1951 arose in connection with the expansion of the existing since the beginning of the 19th century Marie-channel system for Volga-Baltic Waterway and the establishment of Scheksna Dam with hydroelectric power plant ( Scheksninskaja GES Nikolskoye, 1958) near the old village, a working class neighborhood.
In 1954, the settlement, together with the incorporated village, was given the status of an urban-type settlement under its current name after the river. The village of Nikolskoye and from 1954 the Sheksna settlement were the administrative seat of the Prischeksninski rajon from 1927 until its dissolution in 1959. The canal was completed in 1964, the hydroelectric power station in 1966. On January 12, 1965, Scheksna again became the administrative seat of the Rajon, which was now designated as Scheksninski rajon again in changed borders .

Economy and Infrastructure
In addition to the hydropower plant with an output of 84 megawatts, there are companies in Scheksna in the wood processing, food and light industries.
The settlement is situated on the railway line Saint Petersburg - Vologda - Bui (kilometer 512) on this section of the Northern Railway is operated, as well as on the highway A114 that of Vologda to Novaya Ladoga results in Saint Petersburg.
At Scheksna there are lock systems that were last reconstructed in 1990 in the course of the Volga-Baltic Sea Canal.
