Welsk ( Russian Вельск ) is a city in northwestern Russia . It belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 23,885 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It is the administrative center of the Welski rajon of the same name .

geography

The city is located about 545 km south of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk , at the confluence of the eponymous Wel into the Waga , a left tributary of the Northern Dvina .

history

Welsk was first mentioned in 1137 as Wel in a document by the Novgorod prince Svyatoslaw Olegowitsch . Until 1550 the place was called Welski Pogost . From the middle of the 16th century, the settlement now called Welski Possad was part of the Waschski ujesd ( Важский уезд ). In 1708 it became part of the Archangelgorod governorate . On August 6, 1780 Welsk received city ​​status and was part of the Vologda governorate from 1796 to 1929 .
