Welsk ( Russian Вельск ) is a city in northwestern Russia . It belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 23,885 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It is the administrative center of the Welski rajon of the same name .
geography
The city is located about 545 km south of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk , at the confluence of the eponymous Wel into the Waga , a left tributary of the Northern Dvina .
history
Welsk was first mentioned in 1137 as Wel in a document by the Novgorod prince Svyatoslaw Olegowitsch . Until 1550 the place was called Welski Pogost . From the middle of the 16th century, the settlement now called Welski Possad was part of the Waschski ujesd ( Важский уезд ). In 1708 it became part of the Archangelgorod governorate . On August 6, 1780 Welsk received city status and was part of the Vologda governorate from 1796 to 1929 . The two-parts of arms of Velsk contains since that time next to the barrel of tar that the resident in Velsk Teerindustrie symbolized in the upper part of the arms Vologda . In the 19th century, Welsk was the center of flax production . From the middle of the 19th century to 1940 the area around Welsk was also a place of political exile. In 1929 Welsk became the center of the newly established Welski rajon and in 1937 it became part of the Arkhangelsk Oblast.

The most important economic sectors are the food industry , the wood processing industry and mechanical engineering .
In Velsk the Waga from West section Konosha - Kotlas the after Workuta further Petschora railway crossed. The M8 trunk road from Moscow to Arkhangelsk runs through Welsk . The city also has an airport.
