K i sema ( Russian Кизема ) is a settlement in northwestern Russia . The place belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 2968 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It is located in the Ustya district .

geography

Kisema is located about 440 km southwest of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk , near the border with Vologda Oblast . The nearest larger cities are Kotlas, around 100 km to the east, and Welsk, 150 km to the west . The eponymous river Kisema crosses the settlement on the western border of the village .

Kisema is the administrative center of the selskoje posselenije Kisemskoje ( сельское поселение Киземское ). In addition to Kisema, the municipality includes the places Wonschuga ( Вонжуга ) and Senross ( Сенгосс ) and has 3075 inhabitants (as of 2010).

history

Kisema was built in 1942 as a railway station for the Pechora Railway, which was built by prisoners from the surrounding Gulag labor camps in the early 1940s . Since 1947 there was a wood factory in the village. The Kisema Narrow Gauge Railway ( Киземская узкоколейная железная дорога ), which runs south from Kisema, was built to develop wood resources in the surrounding areas . Until 2005, Kisema was an urban-type settlement .

economy

Kisema is a train station on the Konoscha - Kotlas line of the Pechora Railway. The main branches of the economy in Kisema are the timber industry and rail transport. The place has a cultural center, two schools, a kindergarten, two libraries and a hospital.
