Korjaschma ( Russian Коряжма ) is a city in northwestern Russia . It has 39,641 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast .

geography

The city is located on the left bank of the Wytschegda , a right tributary of the Northern Dvina . It is located about 500 km southeast of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk . The nearest larger cities are Solvychegodsk, about 12 km away , and Kotlas, about 30 km upstream of the Wytschegda .

The climate is subarctic continental, with long cold winters and short mild summers.

history

Korjaschma was founded in 1535 with the establishment of the Nikolo-Korjaschemski monastery ( Николо-Коряжемский монастырь ).

In 1954 the construction of a cellulose and paper combine began, through which the city also experienced a boom. It was completed in 1961.

In 1956 it became an urban-type settlement and received town charter on August 15, 1985.

economy

The most important company in the city is still the Pulp and Paper Combine ( Котласский целлюлозно-бумажный комбинат ). With more than 5000 employees, it is the largest paper mill in Russia and Europe.

Other important branches of industry are the chemicals and building materials industries.
