The Konoschski rajon ( Russian Ко́ношский муниципа́льный райо́н / Konoschski munizipalny rajon ) is an administrative unit within the Arkhangelsk Oblast , Russia . It is located south of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk . The administrative center is the urban-type settlement Konosha .

geography

Konozhsky rajon is located in the southwest of Arkhangelsk Oblast on the border of Vologda Oblast . In the west of the Rajon borders the Kargopolski rajon , north of the Njandomski rajon and east of the Welski rajon . The area of the Rajon is 8459 km².

history

The area of today's Konoschski rajon was originally settled by Finnish-Ugric tribes . Slavic tribes only settled here towards the end of the 10th century . In the Middle Ages, the region, like many other parts of northern Russia, served as a place of exile. From the beginning of the 19th century, the present territory of the Rajon was under the administration of the governorates of Olonets, Vologda and Novgorod.

Railway station in Konosha

The region was developed with the construction of the Vologda - Arkhangelsk railway between 1894 and 1897 through the area. The Konoscha train station was built in 1898 and developed into a larger settlement in the years that followed.

The Konoschski rajon was founded on July 15, 1929 as part of the Njandomski okrug ( Няндомский округ ), the Northern Krai . As early as July 31, 1931, the Rajon was dissolved again in the course of an administrative reform. In March 1935, the Konoschski rajon was finally re-established. At that time, the Rajon consisted of 20 village soviets ( сельсовет ) with 20,859 inhabitants. In 1936 it became part of the Northern Oblast and finally on September 23, 1937 part of the newly founded Arkhangelsk Oblast.

In the 1930s, kulaks and other politically persecuted people were increasingly settled in the Konoschski rajon. There they lived in special settlements ( спецпоселение / Spezposselenije ), in which they had to do forced labor. In August 1937 the Gulag "KargopolLag" ( Каргопольлаг ) was established in the region, the administration of which was located in Kargopol until 1940, later in Jerzewo in the Konoschski rajon. Up to 30,100 prisoners were detained in “KargopolLag”, who were mainly used for forest work, logging and wood processing. In addition, there was the "NORTHERN DWINA-ITL" camp in Welski rajon, whose prisoners were used in 1940 for the construction of the Konoscha - Kotlas - Koschwa railway lines on the Pechora Railway .
