List of cities in Russia

Mirny ( Russian Ми́рный ; in German peaceful ) is a city in northwestern Russia . It belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 30,280 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). The city was created during the construction of the nearby Plesetsk Cosmodrome .

geography

The city is located about 300 km south of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk , only a few kilometers from the Plesetsk missile launch site. The next largest city is Njandoma, about 122 km south . In the southwest of the city there is the approximately 2.6 km long 100 meter wide Lake Pleszy .

The city of Mirny is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and is one of the Closed Cities of Russia.

history

Two smaller settlements used to be on the site of today's Mirny. One of them - the village of Pleszy , named after the nearby lake - was already mentioned in documents of the Russian Tsar Peter the Great in 1693. In 1760 the chapel of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God ( Часовня Казанской иконы Божьей Матери ) was built here. The construction of the nearby Moscow - Arkhangelsk railway and the construction of the railway station in the Plesetsk settlement in 1894 were significant for the region .

With the start of the construction of the secret rocket launch site Plesetsk, a housing estate for civilian and military employees was built in the area since 1957. At the beginning of 1958, the territory was placed under the leadership of the Ministry of Defense of the Soviet Union. In total, around 4,000 people were resettled in the area that previously comprised 18 smaller settlements. In 1960 the Mirny settlement was officially founded. In February 1966 the settlement received the status of a closed administrative-territorial structure (closed city). The city's existence was kept secret for many years. It was not officially known until 1983 when an article was published on the Pravda cosmodrome .

Economy and Infrastructure

In Mirny there are five schools, a technical center, several university branches as well as sports and art schools for children. There are also four libraries, as well as a hospital and a polyclinic. The cityscape is largely characterized by prefabricated architecture. Of the more than 9100 apartments, only around 800 are privately owned. The cosmodrome and its associated facilities are still the city's main employers. There is a bus connection to the nearby train station in Plesetsk.
