history
The area of today's Wilegodski rajon was settled by Finno-Ugric tribes as early as the second millennium BC . In the 10th and 11th centuries, the Russian north was increasingly populated by Novgorod settlers. With the establishment of Veliky Ustyug in 1147, the settlement of the surrounding areas increased. In 1379 the missionary Stefan von Perm founded numerous parishes during his missionary work in the Russian North, including the still existing places Ilyinsk and Nikolsk within the Wilegodski rajon. In the 16th century, the Stroganov family of Russian merchants also owned properties in the Wiled River area. The Stroganov founded numerous salt pans in the area around Solvychegodsk . The ships for the salt trade were built in the still existing village of Djakonowo ( Дьяконово ). From the 16th to 17th centuries, the areas around the Wiled River were part of the Ussolski ujesd ( Усольский уезд ). In the 18th century they became part of the Solvytschegodski ujesd ( Сольвычегодский уезд ) within the Vologda governorate . In 1918 the Ujesd became part of the Northern Dvina Governorate ( Северо-Двинская губерния ).
The Wilegodski rajon was founded on April 10, 1924. In 1929 this part of the Northern Krai and in 1936 it became part of the Northern Oblast . In 1937 the Wilegodski rajon was finally incorporated into the newly founded Arkhangelsk Oblast. In the following years there were some territorial reforms in which parts of the Rajon were given up to the Kirov Oblast and the Kotlaski and Lenski rajon.
