In the west of the Welski rajon borders the Konoschski rajon , northwest of the Njandomski rajon , north of the Schenkurski rajon and east of the Ustjanski rajon . The area of the Welski rajon is 10,600 km². Coming from Vologda Oblast, the river Waga ( Вага ) flows through the entire Rajon in a northerly direction. One of the tributaries of the Waga is the 223 km long Wel ( Вель ), which gives the Rajon its name , which flows into the Waga on the left at Welsk. Other important rivers that cross the Rajon are the Kuloi ( Кулой ) and the Ustja ( Устья ), which both flow into the Waga on the right side in the north of the Rajon.
history
The area of today's Welski rajon was originally settled by Finno-Ugric tribes . Novgorod settlers first settled in 862, increasingly displacing the Finno-Ugric tribes. In 1137 the settlement Wel (today's Welsk) was first mentioned in a document by the Novgorod prince Sviatoslav Olegovich. In the 15th century, rule over the area previously controlled by the Novgorod Republic passed to the Grand Duchy of Moscow . In 1550 the area was already part of the Waschski ujesd ( Важский уезд ) and in 1780 it became the Welski ujesd ( Вельский уезд ). With the administrative reform of Catherine the Great , the Ujesd became part of the Vologda governorship in 1780 ( Вологодское наместничество ) and finally in 1796 part of the Vologda governorate . In the 19th century, the region was known for its linen production and the export of wood products such as resin , turpentine and tar . A tar barrel is still part of the Welsk coat of arms. From the 1880s, the Welski ujesd became a place for political exiles.
In 1929 the Welski rajon was established as part of the Northern Krai . The Welski ujesd was dissolved in the course of this. The area of the Ujesds went into the areas Welski rajon, Verkhovashsky rajon and Ustjanski rajon . In addition, some areas were added to the Konoschski rajon . In the course of further administrative reforms, the Welski rajon became part of the Northern Oblast in 1936 and finally part of the Arkhangelsk Oblast on September 23, 1937.
During the Second World War , the Pechora Railway was built. Political prisoners and prisoners from the surrounding gulags were mainly used for this work . The Kuloi railway station was also built as part of the construction of the line . The settlement of Kuloi developing at the railway station is now the second largest town in the Rajon.
