Northern Krai
The Northern Krai ( Russian Северный край , transcribed Severny krai , scientific transliteration Severnyj kraj ) was an administrative unit in the Russian Soviet Socialist Federal Republic , which existed from 1929 to 1936. The Krai was located in the northeast of the RSFSR and in 1929 covered an area of 1,1376,000 km² with 2.474 million inhabitants. The administrative center was the city of Arkhangelsk .
history
The Northern Krai was formed on January 14, 1929 by the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the RSFSR. In it the three governorates Arkhangelsk , Vologda and Northern Dvina as well as the Autonomous Oblast of the Komi were combined. On July 15, 1929, the administrative structure was changed by decree by the Executive Committee. The governorates were dissolved and the areas administratively divided into five okrug . Since the times of the Russian Empire, governors have mostly been divided into regional administrative units, so-called Ujesde . With the Soviet administrative reform, these Ujesde were converted into Rajons . The okrug within the Komi Autonomous Oblast were also converted into Rajons. The islands of the White Sea (including the Solovetsky Islands ), the Barents Sea (including Kolgujew , Matwejew , Waigatsch ) and the Arctic Ocean (including Franz Josef Land , Nowaja Zemlya ) were directly subordinated to the administration of the Krai.
Another administrative reform followed in July 1930. The Nenezki nazionalny okrug became an autonomous administrative unit. The Komi Autonomous Oblast also remained. The other four okrug were dissolved and the 50 Rajons were directly under the administration of the Krai. In the following years there were numerous other administrative reforms in which various Rajons were dissolved, newly created, renamed or territorially expanded, so that the Northern Krai had 65 Rajons in 1936.
With the Soviet Constitution of 1936 , the Northern Krai was dissolved and its territories were divided between the Northern Oblast and the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of the Komi . The Northern Oblast was abolished a year later. Its territories were transferred to the newly established Arkhangelsk Oblast and Vologda Oblast .
