Pinega in the northern catchment area of the Northern Dvina |
The 779 km long Pinega ( Russian Пинега ) is a right tributary of the Northern Dvina in the north of the European part of Russia .
The Pinega arises in the east of Arkhangelsk Oblast at a height of 135 m from the short, approximately 30 kilometers long source rivers Belaja ("the white") and Chornaya ("the black"). First of all, it flows in a wide valley in a mainly north-westerly direction through the taiga of the northern Eastern European lowlands, turns over the last 100 kilometers in a south-westerly direction and finally flows into the lower reaches of the Northern Dwina at the village of Ust-Pinega (at a height of 1 m ) .
The catchment area of the Pinega covers 42,600 km². The mean water flow at the mouth is 430 m³ / s (minimum in March, maximum in May with over 1700 m³ / s). About 120 kilometers above the estuary, at the Pinega settlement of the same name , the river approaches the Kuloi , which flows into the Mesenbusen , with which it is connected via the Kuloikanal , up to a few kilometers . In the lower reaches of the Pinega is about 400 meters wide and two meters deep, the flow rate is 0.7 m / s. The valley narrows in the last ten kilometers before the mouth: the width of the river is only 200 meters here, the depth increases to up to ten meters.
The main tributaries are, from left Vyya River ( Выя ), Jula ( Юла ) and Pokshenga River ( Покшенга ) from right Ilesha River ( Илеша ) and Yezhuga River ( Ежуга ).
The Pinega is crossed twice by the Arkhangelsk – Karpogory railway line .
The Pinega freezes from late October / early November to late April / early May. It is navigable over a length of 580 kilometers up to the Gorka pier .
