geography
The city is located about 342 km south of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk . The next larger city is Kargopol, about 70 km away .
Njandoma is the administrative center of the Njandomski rajon, which is about 8100 km² in size .
history
The history of the city began in 1894 with the construction of the Vologda - Arkhangelsk railway line . In autumn 1895 the foundation stone for the station was laid and the two settlements Njandoma and Schenkurski were built. The railway line was opened in 1898. This year is now officially Njandoma's founding date.
In 1905 Njandoma already owned 28 houses, in which around 1000 permanent workers and around 300 temporary workers lived. On December 8, 1905, as part of the unrest during the Russian Revolution, there was also a workers' strike in the Nyandoma area. After an eight-day strike, during which all rail traffic between Woschega and Jemza was shut down, the strike was crushed and the strike committee arrested. In 1909 the settlement was connected to the telephone network. In 1910, Njandoma owned more than 100 buildings, including about 50 residential houses. Most of these buildings fell victim to a major fire in the same year and had to be rebuilt. In 1913, the settlement of Njandoma consisted of two rows of houses and a church next to the train station. The nearby Schenkurski settlement was the main trading point. The post office was also located in it. Between 1915 and 1916, the entire narrow-gauge railway line Vologda - Arkhangelsk was converted to wider tracks. As a result of this measure, the population of Njandoma continued to grow and more rows of houses were built shortly. During the Russian Civil War , railways in Nyandoma were armored and sent to the front.
In 1923, Njandoma was merged with the Schenkurski settlement, where mainly farmers, traders and craftsmen lived. The united settlement kept the name Njandoma. In 1926 the Railway Club opened in Nyandoma. The club's building was financed by the residents of Njandoma and with funds from the railroad workers and was one of the most architecturally opulent structures in the settlement at that time. It served as a venue for theater performances and orchestral music, among other things. In March 1928, the dome of the Sossimi and Savvatija Church, built in 1894, was removed and a pioneer house was built in the building .
In August 1929, Njandoma became the center of the Njandomski rajon in the Northern Krai and finally on September 14, 1929 it was named a workers' settlement . In 1937 it became part of Arkhangelsk Oblast. On September 19, 1939, the settlement was granted city rights.
