Podjuga ( Russian Подюга ) is a settlement in northwestern Russia . The place belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 2626 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It is in the Konoschski rajon .

geography

Podjuga is located about 380 kilometers south of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk . The nearest cities are the district center of Konosha, 35 km to the west, and Welsk, 65 km to the east . The eponymous river Podjuga runs through the settlement .

history

The name Podjuga is of Finno-Ugric origin and is derived from the words pad (in German: forest thicket ) and ga (in German: water , river ). Today's settlement Podjuga was established in the late 1920s as Lesopunkt 39th kilometer ( лесопункт 39-й км ). The majority of the population at that time were deported kulaks , who came mainly from the southern parts of the Soviet Union , Ukraine and Belarus and were mainly used in forestry. First residential barracks, later residential houses, a middle school and companies were built in the settlement. Since large quantities of gravel and stones were required for the construction of the Konoscha-Kotlas railway line in the 1930s, a stone and gravel works was founded in Podjuga in 1935. In March 1935, the Podjuga village soviet was founded as part of the Konoschski rajon. The administration of this village soviet was until 1940 in the nearby village of Nikolayevka . In May 1959 Podjuga received the status of a workers' settlement and the former village soviet was converted into the Podjuga Settlement Council ( Подюжский поселковый Совет ). Today Podjuga is the administrative center of the rural community Podjuschskoje ( Подюжское сельское поселение ), which has 4,661 inhabitants .

Economy and Transport

The most important industry in Podjuga is still the forest and wood industry. There is also a quarry.

Podjuga has a railway station and is therefore connected to the railway network of the Russian Northern Railway . Originally, Podjuga was the starting point of several railway lines, which mainly opened up forest areas for forestry. The Kwarsongski Narrow Gauge Railway ( Кварзеньгская узкоколейная железная дорога ) as well as the Pastuchowski Narrow Gauge Railway ( Пастуховская Пастуховская уастуховская астуховская астуховская астуховская астуховская уазлекокар from their network.
