The Wytschegda ( Russian Вычегда , Komi Ежва (Eschwa)) is a 1130 km long right tributary of the Northern Dvina in northern European Russia .

It rises about 310 km west of the Northern Ural Mountains in the extreme southeast of the Timan Ridge and flows from there, meandering very strongly, first to the south and then in a westerly direction via Syktyvkar to Solvychegodsk ; The latter is about 20 km northeast of Kotlas . There the river flows into the Northern Dvina . Around 800 km of the river is navigable.

Tributaries and canals

The upper reaches of the Wytschegda was once connected to the Volga via the Kama via the Katharin Canal; However, this can also be approached from the mouth of the Wytschegda via the upper reaches of the Northern Dvina and the Suchona .
