The Verkhnyaya Lupja ( Russian Верхняя Лунья ( "Upper Lupja")) is a left tributary of Vychegda in the Arkhangelsk Oblast and the Komi Republic in the north of the European part of Russia .
The Verkhnyaya Lupja runs east of the lower reaches of the Wytschegda. It rises in Lena Raion in the southeast of Arkhangelsk Oblast. It initially flows in an arc to the northeast into the Komi Republic, then turns west and returns to Lena Rajon. It passes the Urdoma settlement and then turns south. At the Lupja settlement, it changes course again and swings west. Finally it flows into the Wytschegda, 99 km above its mouth in the Northern Dvina . The Verkhnyaya Lupja has a length of 175 km. It drains an area of 1520 km². It shows a strongly meandering behavior in the middle and lower reaches . It is fed by the melting of snow as well as by precipitation . The river was previously used for rafting .
