Arseni Borisovich Roginsky
Arseni Borissowitsch Roginski ( Russian Арсений Борисович Рогинский ; born March 30, 1946 in Welsk , Arkhangelsk Oblast , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ; died December 18, 2017 in Tel Aviv , Israel ) was a Russian historian and human rights activist .
Life
Roginski's father was an engineer from Leningrad who had been transferred to the Gulag . Roginski graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology at the University of Tartu in 1968. He worked as a bibliographer and school teacher for Russian language and literature. As a scientist, he studied the history of the Soviet Union, particularly in the 1920s. He dealt in detail with the destruction of the Social Revolutionary Party by the Bolsheviks .
From 1975 to 1981 he published in samizdat , since 1978 also abroad. He was the editor of the underground magazine Pamjat (Память - memory). He refused to be deported to Israel. He was arrested on August 12, 1981 and sentenced to four years imprisonment on a false accusation. The last word in court he gave the speech “The situation of the historian in Russia” (published in the Paris newspaper Russkaya Mysl , in German translation published in Kontinent , No. 23). He had to serve his full sentence. Freed since 1985, he was fully rehabilitated in 1992.
In 1988 Roginski was a founding member of the Memorial Society , which campaigns for human rights and the coming to terms with the history of Stalinism . With others he accepted the Lew Kopelew Prize for Peace and Human Rights in Cologne for Memorial . On February 16, 2010 he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany.
