Georgi Dmitrievich Karpetschenko ( Russian Георгий Дмитриевич Карпеченко * April 21 . Jul / 3. May  1899 greg. In Velsk , † 28. July 1941 in Moscow ) was a Soviet biologist.

Life

Karpchenko specialized in cell biology and created several hybrids .

Among his contributions is his pioneering work in the field of allopolyploids , which culminated in the creation of fertile offspring of radish ( Raphanus sativus ) and cabbage ( Brassica oleracea ).

He worked at the Institute for Applied Botany near Leningrad in collaboration with geneticists from other countries, in particular Øjvind Winge in Denmark and Erwin Baur in Germany.

During the Stalin terror he was accused of belonging to an alleged "anti-Soviet group" around the well-known Russian botanist Nikolai Wawilow . He was sentenced to death and executed on July 28, 1941.
