The 575 km long Waga ( Russian Вага ) is the most important left tributary of the Northern Dvina in the north of the European part of Russia .

The Waga rises in a swamp area in the northeast of the Vologda Oblast at a height of about 200  m . It flows, later on the territory of Arkhangelsk Oblast , in a northerly direction through the forest areas of the northern Eastern European lowlands until it finally flows into the Northern Dvina between Ust-Waga and Beresnik (at 13  m above sea level).

The catchment area of the Waga covers 44,800 km². At the village of Schegowary , about 80 km from the mouth, the mean water flow is 384 m³ / s (minimum in March with 86 m³ / s, maximum in May with 1804 m³ / s). In the lower reaches the river is about 500 m wide, 1 m deep, the flow velocity is 0.4 m / s. The main tributaries are Wel from the left and Kuloi and Ustja from the right .

The cities of Welsk and Schenkursk are located on the Waga . The M8 Moscow - Arkhangelsk highway runs along the middle and lower reaches of the Waga for about 350 kilometers to the west, over long stretches in the immediate vicinity of the river . At Welsk, the river is crossed by the western section of the Pechora railway ( Konoscha - Kotlas ).

The waga freezes from mid-November to late April. It is navigable up to the mouth of the Ustja (near Ust-Ustja ), when the water level is high up to Welsk.
