history

Nolinsk was founded in 1668 as Nikolski pogost ( Никольский погост ). This name literally meant "Nikolaus-Kirchhof" and came from the St. Nicholas Church , which existed there at that time and had belonged to the Assumption Monastery of Vyatka since 1612 . Later, the name Noli ( Ноли ), which was derived from the river Nolja , was used for the place .

After the state-ordered expropriation of Russian monasteries, the village came into state ownership in 1764 and received city rights and the name Nolinsk in 1780 . The city coat of arms of Nolinsk dates from 1781. In 1823 and 1865 the city was ravaged by devastating fires and had to be rebuilt to a large extent.

At the turn of the century, Nolinsk was known as a place of exile for politically convicted people. Probably the best-known exile who lived in Nolinsk was the revolutionary and later secret service functionary Felix Dzerzhinsky from August to December 1898.

From 1940 to 1957 Nolinsk was called Molotovsk ( Молотовск ), named after the former Soviet Foreign Minister and Stalin confidante Vyacheslav Molotov , who came from the Vyatka area. With the de-Stalinization it got its historical name back.
