Kirs ( Russian Кирс ) is a town in Kirov Oblast ( Russia ) with 10,420 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). The city is the administrative center of the Verkhnyaya Kama Rajons (Upper Kama) and is located about 220 km northeast of the Oblast capital Kirov near the mouth of the Kirs River in the Vyatka , a right tributary of the Kama .
history
Kirs was established in 1729 as a workers' settlement with the establishment of an iron foundry by the merchant Grigori Vyazemsky. The place was named after the river of the same name, whose name originally comes from the Komi language and means "steep bank" there. In the 1860s, the foundry was bought up by the state and significantly expanded, but Kirs only received town charter in 1965.

Today the industry in Kirs is represented by companies in the food and wood industry and a cable factory.
Attractions
The historical sights of the city include the Church of the Protection and Intercession (Покровская церковь), built from 1894 to 1915, a history museum and an artificial pond that was built in the 1730s and was originally used to power the mechanical systems of the iron foundry.
