Vladimir Semjonowitsch Myshkin ( Russian Владимир Семёнович Мышкин ; born June 19, 1955 in Kirovo-Chepetsk ) is a former Russian ice hockey goalkeeper and national goalkeeper of the Soviet national ice hockey team in the 1970s and 1980s.

Career

Myshkin, who was born in Kirovo-Chepetsk in what was then the Russian SFSR , was one of the few Jewish players in the Soviet team and back-up goalie, and thus in the constant shadow of the towering Vladislav Tretyak . Nevertheless, he gained international fame on two occasions:

  • On February 11, 1979, coach Viktor Tikhonov surprised everyone with his decision to put Myshkin All-Stars on the grid at the Challenge Cup against the National Hockey League . He thanked his team with a shutout in the 6-0 win.
  • But he achieved his greatest fame during the 1980 Winter Olympics in the legendary game ( Miracle on Ice ) against the USA . At the end of the first period he was substituted on by his coach Viktor Tichonow instead of Vladislav Tretyak, who had been in goal up until then. In the second period he was able to prevent two goals, but in the last period he could not keep the shots of the Americans Mark Johnson and Mike Eruzione and the game was lost 4-3. To this day, Tikhonov's decision for Myshkin is considered the wrong decision and the “sticking point” of the game.

Today Myshkin is a young goalkeeper coach at EV Zug . He also looks after the Russian national team as a goalkeeping coach.
