The Olympic Winter Games in 1980 were held in Lake Placid in the state of New York in the United States instead. The Olympic ice hockey tournament was held from February 12 to 24. Twelve teams took part in this tournament.
The eight teams in Group A of the 1979 Ice Hockey World Championship and the best four teams in Group B were eligible to participate . For the GDR (B group second) and Switzerland (B group fifth), both of which did not participate, Japan (B group sixth) moved up. Since there was no ice hockey world championship for the first time this year , the Thayer Tutt Trophy was introduced as a replacement for those nations that did not qualify for the Olympics . Switzerland became the winner.
The mode of competition has been changed compared to previous Olympic tournaments. First of all, they played in two preliminary round groups with six teams each, then the first and second placed reached the final round, in which the medals were played, taking their direct comparisons with them. The two third-placed players played for fifth place.
For many observers, the ice hockey tournament brought the biggest surprise since Britain won the Olympic Games in 1936 . The host USA won their second Olympic gold medal, and in what has become legendary as Miracle on Ice , they beat the top favorites from the USSR. In contrast, neither Czechoslovakia nor Canada reached the final round and finished fifth and sixth respectively. For record Olympic champions Canada - after not participating in 1972 and 1976 for the first time in twelve years - it was the worst result so far at all Olympic tournaments and world championships.
