Kenneth Arlington "Ken" Morrow (born October 17, 1956 in Flint , Michigan ) is a former American ice hockey player (defender) who played for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League from 1980 to 1989 .

Career

As a junior, he played for Bowling Green State University with Mike Liut . In the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft , the New York Islanders selected him in the fourth round as 68th. In the same year that secured New England Whalers in the WHA Amateur Draft in 1976 , the rights to the WHA in the eighth round at the 86th spot.

During his time at university, he played for the US national ice hockey team at the 1978 Ice Hockey World Championship . After another year at Bowling Green State University , he joined the US national team and spent the 1979/80 season preparing for the Winter Olympics . At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , he was part of the " Miracle on Ice " when the US team surprisingly won the gold medal.

Immediately after the Olympics, he moved to the New York Islanders and immediately made his breakthrough in the NHL. With him in defense, Dave Lewis became dispensable, who became the key to a swap deal where the Islanders brought Butch Goring from the Los Angeles Kings . With Morrow and Goring in the squad, the Islanders won the first Stanley Cup in the club's history at the end of the 1979/80 season . Morrow was one of the few players who could become Olympic and Stanley Cup winners in one year.

Morrow stayed with the Islanders and won four consecutive Stanley Cups. As a defender, he wasn't a big scorer, but many of his points came in important game situations. Including an overtime goal in the playoffs of the 1983/84 season .

After ten years in the Islanders' jersey, knee complaints forced him to end his career. Among other things, he worked for the Kansas City Blades in the IHL as an assistant coach before returning to the Islanders as an assistant coach and scout .

In 1995 he was honored with induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .
