The games of group A of the 46th Ice Hockey World Championship (also the 57th European Ice Hockey Championship ) took place from April 14 to 27, 1979 in Moscow in the Soviet Union . Group B played in Galați in Romania from March 16 to 24, and the C World Cup was held in Barcelona , Spain from March 16 to 25 . A total of 26 teams took part, a new record, including a team from South Korea as a newcomer to the World Cup.

The hosting of the A-WM was changed again after only 3 years at a meeting of the IIHF in Paris (August 27, 1978). First a preliminary round was played out in 2 groups. The respective group winners and runners-up moved into the championship round with their direct comparisons, the third and fourth-placed winners also played in a relegation round with their direct comparisons. Championship and relegation round were played as double rounds. The aim of this reform was to reduce the number of games (previously 10, now 8) and thus reduce the burden on the players and shorten the duration of the World Cup.

There was also a new mode of competition in group B, which for the first time comprised 10 teams due to political quarrels between China and South Korea, which were already described at the 1978 World Cup . Here, too, there was initially a preliminary round in two groups with 5 teams each. The first two in each group then played off the promoted team to the A group in a final round, and the last two were relegated to the C group. The third and fourth placed of the two preliminary round groups then determined two further relegated teams in a placement round.

The C-World Cup was supposed to take place in the People's Republic of China, but due to the political disputes already described, the World Cup was withdrawn from China and given to Spain at short notice, which was then allowed to host the C-Group twice in a row.

A world championship

The A World Cup in Moscow saw an overwhelming host. The big opponents from Czechoslovakia, Sweden and Canada looked downright second-rate. For the USSR it was the 16th World Cup and 19th European title. There was a sensation in the B group, where the B group newcomer Netherlands prevailed and thus made the march from the C to the A group. The method used by the Dutch to locate Canadian ice hockey players of Dutch descent, then naturalize them and then use them in the national team, should set a precedent and enable many a rapid rise in hockey nations that were previously under-rated.
