Gennadi Dmitrijewitsch Zygankow ( Russian Геннадий Дмитриевич Цыганков ; born August 16, 1947 in Vanino , † February 16, 2006 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian ice hockey player and coach.
Career
Gennadi Zygankow grew up in Wanino in the Far East and played various sports as a child before concentrating more on ice hockey in school age. First he played with other children on the frozen bay in front of Wanino before the football stadium was flooded regularly in winter and used as a playground. Zygankow joined the local sports group Wodnik and was able to defeat with his team, among other things, the juniors of the SKA Khabarovsk .
In 1966 Zygankow was drafted into the army and after half a year of basic military service he was delegated to the SKA Khabarovsk military club . With this he played in the then lower class Class B and in the military championship. He then moved to the then elite club ZSKA Moscow , with which he achieved many successes at national and international level in the following years.
In total, he scored 52 goals in 362 games in the Soviet league .
International
In spring 1971 he was nominated for the first time for the Soviet national team . On March 2, 1971, he was in a game against Sweden for the first time for the Sbornaja on the ice. His international career was crowned with gold medals at the 1972 and 1976 Winter Olympics . For the national team, he scored 17 goals in 201 internationals. He was world champion six times with his team (1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1978 and 1979).
In 1972 he was named the Honored Master of Sports of the USSR . On April 25, 1979 he played his last international match.
As a trainer
He later worked as a coach in the ice hockey field.
In 2004, doctors discovered Zygankow's prostate cancer that had been surgically removed. As part of his rehabilitation, Zygankow refused his medication and instead relied on alternative healing methods. At first they seemed to work, but he died on the night of February 15-16, 2006 at 2:45 am at the age of 59 in Saint Petersburg. The following Saturday, February 18, 2006, he was buried in the Seraphim Cemetery in Saint Petersburg. In August 2006, the day he was born, a memorial stone was erected on his grave.
